Born into a musical family, Richard Rózsa began playing the cello at the age of 6 in his
hometown Debrecen, Hungary. When he turned to 14 he was admitted to the special school of
young talents at the Music Academy of Debrecen where Ádám Károly was his professor and
at the same time he studied physics at the Kossuth Lajos University. From the age of 19 to 24
he was a student of the renowned Liszt Academy of Budapest in the class of prof. Ottó
Kertész. At the chamber music faculty, which has a great tradition in Hungary, prof. Márta
Gulyás and Sándor Devich were his teachers. During this period he won first and third prize
as well for his performance at the National Competition for Composers, another first prize
with his string trio at the Leó Weiner Chamber Music Competition of Hungary. After
graduating as Master of Music in Performance Cello and Teaching from Liszt Academy, his
music studies continued in Germany for 2 years with prof. Gustav Rivinius in Saarbrücken.
He was eager to study more at numerous masterclasses with cellists like Uzi Wiesel, Franz
Helmerson, Martin Lovett (Amadeus Quartet), Ina-Esther Joost; with chamber musicians like
Norbert Brainin (Amadeus Quartet), Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet), Milan Skampa
(Smetana Quartet), László Mező (Bartók Quartet).
After his studies he was a member of the Hungarian National Philharmonic from 2000 to
2001, then worked at the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra from 2001 to 2013. He was the
principal cellist of the Hungarian State Opera from 2013 to 2015. He plays regularly in the
Chamber Orchestra of Europe from 2014. Currently he is the solocellist of the MAV
Symphony Orchestra.
Richard Rózsa intensely maintains an international chamber music activity; his partners
include Maxim Vengerov,Gustav Rivinius,Roman Guyot,Jenő Jandó, Márta Gulyás, János
Rolla, György Konrád, Vilmos Szabadi, János Selmeczi, Özcan Ulucan, Fuminori Maro
Shinozaki . In 2005 he was honored by the Spanish
Royal Family to give a concert on the Royal Strad, in Madrid, Spain. He is also committed to
play contemporary music: for example a cello concerto was dedicated to him by Tamás
Beischer-Matyó, he performed this piece (Suite concertante for cello and string orchestra)
with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in 2008. He plays regularly at the Hungarian Radio
Classical Music Series as a soloist and chamber musician as well. Has numerous CD and
DVD recordings as a member of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, released by Hungaroton,
Erato, Teldec, EMI, Quintana or CBS – Sony Classic.
